Hazrat Abu Bakr may Allah be pleased with him was the first one who accepted Islam and believed in the Prophet peace be upon him. He is one of the most senior companions and his life is a guideline for all of us as to how a believer should spend his life. Following are some of his virtues:
He loved Prophet (peace be upon him)
Abu Bakr had an undying love for he Prophet peace be upon him. We all know that iman of a Muslim is not complete until he believes in Allah and the Prophet and loves them first and foremost.
He supported Prophet peace be upon him through hiswealth.
Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “The wealth of no one has benefited me as much as the wealth of Abu Bakr.” Abu Bakr wept and he said, “My life and my wealth are only for you, O Messenger of Allah.”Musnad Aḥmad 7397
He was there to defend Prophet peace be upon him when the kuffar tortured him.
Abdullah ibn Amr reported: I saw ‘Uqbah ibn Abi Mu’ayt coming to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, while he was praying. ‘Uqbah put his sheet around the Prophet’s neck and squeezed it tightly. Abu Bakr came and pulled ‘Uqbah away from the Prophet and he said, “Do you kill a man only because he says, ‘My Lord is Allah,’ and he brought you clear evidence from your Lord?”Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 3475
In surah Tawbah, Allah describes the migration of the Porphet peace be upon him to Madinah and on this migration, Abu Bakr was with him. When Abu Bakr became afraid that kuffar will find them, Prophet peace be upon him told him to not be sad.
“If you help him (Muhammad) not (it does not matter), for Allaah did indeed help him when the disbelievers drove him out, the second of the two; when they (Muhammad and Abu Bakr) were in the cave, he said to his companion (Abu Bakr): “Be not sad (or afraid), surely, Allaah is with us.” Then Allaah sent down His Sakeenah (calmness, tranquillity, peace) upon him, and strengthened him with forces (angels) which you saw not, and made the word of those who disbelieved the lowermost, while the Word of Allaah that became the uppermost; and Allaah is All-Mighty, All-Wise”al-Tawbah 9:40
This shows us that Abu Bakr’s love for the Prophet wasn’t just by his words, he practically risked his life to be by the Prophet’s side all times.
Prophet (peace be upon him) Loved Abu Bakr
Prophet peace be upon him loved Abu Bakr the most of all men as the following hadith tells us.
‘Amr ibn Al-‘As reported: I said, “Which person is most beloved to you?” The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Aisha.” I said, “I mean among men.” The Prophet said, “Her father.” I said, “Then who?” The Prophet said, “Umar ibn al-Khattab,” and he mentioned some other men.Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 3462, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2384
He was Al-Siddiq, the Truthful
He believed in the Prophet peace be upon him and affirmed what he said. When miraaj happened, people made fun of Prophet peace be upon him for saying that he has travelled to Jerusalem and the skies. But Abu Bakr, stood by him.
Aisha reported: After the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was miraculously taken by night to the furthest mosque in Jerusalem, he awoke and told the people about it. Some of them renounced their faith and belief in him. They sought Abu Bakr and they said, “Have you heard that your friend imagined he was taken by night to the sacred house?” Abu Bakr said, “Did he say that?” They said yes. Abu Bakr said, “If he said it, he has spoken the truth.” They said, “Do you believe he went by night to the sacred house and returned before morning?” Abu Bakr said, “Yes. Verily, I believe what is even more astonishing than that. I believe he has received messages from heaven for everything he does.” For this reason, Abu Bakr was named the Truthful, al-Siddiq.Dalā’il al-Nubuwwah 680
Quran was compiled during his time for the first time
Abu Bakr was th e first one who compiled Quran on the suggestion of Hazrat Umar. It was a great achievement because Quran was preserved in a scattered form before this.
‘Abdu Khayr reported: Ali ibn Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him, said, “May Allah have mercy on Abu Bakr. He was the first to compile the Quran between two covers.”Muṣannaf Ibn Abī Shaybah 30229
He was merciful
He was merciful and soft, always leading towards the softer approach. This shows how much compassionate and empathetic he was.
Anas ibn Malik reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “The most merciful of my nation is Abu Bakr.Sunan al-Tirmidhī 3791
Her mercy is affirmed by the following incident on when Prophet asked him about the prisoner of Badr, he was of the opinion they should be released for ransom as opposed to what Umar suggested i.e. killing them.
Umar ibn Al-Khattab reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to Abu Bakr and Umar on the day of Badr: What is your opinion about these captives? Abu Bakr said, “They are our kith and kin. I think you should release them after getting for a ransom. This will be a source of strength to us against the unbelievers and Allah might guide them to Islam.” …Sahih Muslim 1763
