Everyone in this world goes through ups and downs. We go through happy times and sad times. But at times we come face to face with a blizzard, a storm that is trying to blow us away. It can be anything, death of a loved one, an abusive relationship, financial stress, spiritual turmoil.
Because this world was meant to be a test for the believer. And everyone has a different exam and is tested differently.
“Do people think that they will be left alone because they say: ‘We believe,’ and will not be tested. And We indeed tested those who were before them. And Allaah will certainly make (it) known (the truth of) those who are true, and will certainly make (it) known (the falsehood of) those who are liars, (although Allaah knows all that before putting them to test)”[al-‘Ankaboot 29:2-3]
The Up Side
Our Sins are forgiven. Even for the slightest harm, we receive, our sins are forgiven as a result.
Narrated `Aisha: (the wife of the Prophet) Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “No calamity befalls a Muslim but that Allah expiates some of his sins because of it, even though it were the prick he receives from a thorn.”Sahih al-Bukhari 5640
In another hadith…
Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “If Allah wants to do good to somebody, He afflicts him with trials.”Sahih al-Bukhari 5645
Our sins are forgiven like the leaves falling from a tree.
Narrated `Abdullah: I visited the Prophet (ﷺ) during his ailments and he was suffering from a high fever. I said, “You have a high fever. Is it because you will have a double reward for it?” He said, “Yes, for no Muslim is afflicted with any harm but that Allah will remove his sins as the leaves of a tree fall down.”Sahih al-Bukhari 5647

What to do when something befalls us?
Trials Remind us to Repent
Number one is asking for forgiveness. Whenever there is a hardship we should turn to Allah and connect to him.
“See they not that they are put in trial once or twice every year (with different kinds of calamities, disease, famine)? Yet, they turn not in repentance, nor do they learn a lesson (from it)”[al-Tawbah 9:126]
Patience and Hope
The only thing that can keep us afloat during a storm is patience and hope. Knowing that Allah loves patient is a motivater for us to keep our hopes up.
“Allah loves the Patient” (Surah 3: 146)
Stay Connected to Loved Ones
The people who you know, love and trust will be your emotional support during any hardship that you face. Allah says in the Quran:
The believers are but brothers…Surat al-Hujurat 49:10
In another surah, Allah says:
The believing men and believing women are allies of one another.Surat al-Tawba 9:71
If a loved one is goinng through a tough time, be their ally, be their support and help them navigate the storm. Do fo rthem what you would want for yourself to be done.
