Tahajjud is one of most spiritual experience I have ever had. The serenity of the night, the quietness before fajr adhaan, the lack of any interruptions makes it an out of world experience.
The daily 5 prayers are offered during the hustle and bustle of the day. Either we are on a break from work or gearing up for our next class at school, hurriedly praying before our toddler does something dangerous. No doubt the five prayers are important and compulsory, and they provided a much-needed break from this world and refocus us towards our goal. The tahajjud prayer isn’t a compulsory prayer but it carries a lot of virtues.
Tahajjud is Second Most Virtuous Prayer After the Compulsory Ones
Abu Huraira narrated that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, “The very best prayer after the compulsory prayers is the night-time prayer.” Muslim
If we are regular in our daily prayers, we can try to include tahajjud in our routine. If it is not possible daily, then we can try once in a while to pray tahajjud. It will give extra strength to the connection that we have with God.
Few People Pray Tahajjud
Very few people get the taufeeq of talking to their Lord in the night. This is shown by the following hadith.
“Which late-night prayer is the best?” He said: “I asked the Messenger of Allah the same that you asked me, and he said, ‘The (one done during) middle of the latter half of the night, and very few do it.’” (Ahmad)
If we want to from the blessed few, we will have to make extra effort and interrupt our sleep so we can collect the benefits of praying tahajjud.
Prayers are Accepted at Tahajjud
“The Lord descends every night to the lowest heaven when one-third of the night remains and says: ‘Who will call upon Me, that I may answer Him? Who will ask of Me, that I may give him? Who will seek My forgiveness that I may forgive him?’” Bukhari, Muslim
If there is anything you are worried about, pray to Allah on tahajjud. If you want something, then ask for it on tahajjud. If you want to say istighfar for your sins, then pray on tahajjud.
How to Pray Tahajjud?
Last third of the night when you wake up after sleep.
Make wudu and pray 2 rakah. You can pray as many rakah as you want but in two and two format.
After praying rakahs, you should supplicate in any language you want and make any duas that you want to.
Note: If you decide to wake up for tahajjud then you can pray vitr before tahajjud instead of after isha.
