Good Health – A Blessing
Good health is one of the most important blessings from Allah. And as a Muslim, it is obligatory upon us to take care of our body and health. Gratitude of any blessing has 3 parts: being grateful from heart, expressing gratitude verbally and taking actions which show gratefulness. One the gifts from Allah is our body and it is part of being grateful that we take care of it by adopting healthy habits. If we choose to ignore the needs of our body, we will ruin the precious blessing we have.
The Prophet (PBUH) said, “There are two blessings which many people do not appreciate: health and leisure time.”Sahih Bukhari
This hadith points towards one of our common behaviours. How often is it that when we get flu and our nose is blocked, then we realize what blessing it is to have an unblocked and normally functioning nose. Having a blessing and not realizing its worth until it is taken away is one common behaviour of humans. Today’s article will serve us all as a reminder to thank Allah for our body and health and the fact that we should be careful about whatever we consume and our habits regarding exercise etc.
What was the last time you truly, sincerely looked at yourself and thanked Allah for your body? Do that now. Think of al the things you CAN do and experience because of your good health? Say Alhamdulillah.

The Rights of Our Body
While we may realize that it is indeed a blessing and we should take care of it but still why? The answer to that is the following hadith.
Aisha reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, sent for Uthman ibn Mazh’un and he came. The Prophet said, “O Uthman, do you not desire my practice?” Uthman said, “O Messenger of Allah, no by Allah. I seek your practice.” The Prophet said, “Verily, I sleep and I pray, I fast and I break my fast, and I marry women. Fear Allah, O Uthman, for your family has rights over you and your guest has rights over you. Verily, your own self has rights over you, so fast and break your fast, pray and sleep.”Sunan Abi Dawood
In this hadith Prophet SAW tells us that our own self has rights over us. In fact, he mentions that doing extra nafal ibadat so much that it affects health isn’t appropriate. Can you imagine that taking care of oneself, has more weightage than ibadah i.e. praying and fasting.
Strong Believer vs Weak Believer
In another hadith:
Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “The strong believer is more beloved to Allah than the weak believer…”Sahih Muslim
Being strong is more beloved to Allah than being weak. This doesn’t mean if someone has any illness then it is his fault and Allah loves him less. No. It means that if one believer puts genuine effort in being strong e.g. eating healthy, exercising etc. than Allah loves him more. This hadith is so motivating for all of us.
In Quran, Allah said:
وكُلُواْ وَاشْرَبُواْ وَلاَ تُسْرِفُواْ
… and eat and drink but be not excessiveQuran 7:31
The most important rule to follow for a healthy life style is conveyed in this ayah which is eating in moderation. Problems start arising when we don’t put a stop to our eating. We keep on stuffing ourselves even our stomach is full. This leads to problems like obesity, blood pressure and diabetes. If instead of being greedy, we exercise self control, many issues will not arise in the first place.
Let’s all make a promise to ourselves today that not only, we will express gratitude to God for the amazing gift of our body and health but we will also, take good care of them.
